WIAW…salty and sweet!

Hey guys! Thank you all for your lovely comments on my last post. I’m feeling 100% better now.  I have no idea what was wrong me me, must have been a 24 hour thing but it’s now long gone and a distant memory. 🙂

Peas and Crayons

Luckily my appetite returned in bucket loads yesterday morning.  I was so happy as I would have hated to have missed this weeks WIAW party hosted by the lovely Jenn!

Since I was working extra hours at my retail job yesterday I didn’t have time to go to the gym so  before breakfast I did my abs and core workout plus a hip opening yoga podcast from Yoga Download.com.  Normally I would have felt a little guilty about not being able to go to the gym.  But I was really surprised as I’ve found it really hard to shake off that kind of attitude.  I know that I eat well and workout out lots so not making it to the gym to workout when it is on my workout schedule really shouldn’t really get to me.  This is something that I have considered when formulating my new fitness program, which I can’t wait to start and share with you later this week.

After my yoga session I had a lovely breakfast of pink apple and cinnamon granola with raspberries, a chopped apple and a chopped pear, vanilla rice milk and some smooth peanut butter.

Awesome! 🙂

For lunch I made sure that I packed a huge monster of a salad and after seeing Laura’s version of Ragnhild’s sweet and salty fig salad with walnuts I knew that I had to give it a try.

I adapted the recipe for my salad slightly and it included mixed living lettuce leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, figs and almonds.  I made a lovely salad dressing made from canola oil, balsamic vinegar, honey and salt. The dressing still gave me that sweet and salty mix that I love so much.  But, I will definitely be trying it with the salted walnuts next time too- they sound like such a great snack!

  Ragnhild is a genius!

In the afternoon I snacked on a gingerbread Nakd bar and an apple.  As soon as I got home I was straight in the kitchen to make a version of my Aubergine and Kale Coconut Curry:

Rather than green lentils I added in some chick peas that I cooked up at the weekend and left out the kale, but had some steamed chard in coconut oil on the side.  This was just what I needed after a busy and long say at work.  I’m doing another extra shift today too and have lots of this left over for tonight’s dinner.  I thought doing a few extra shifts at work every now and then would be a great way to get back some routine in my life.  Sitting reading and writing a thesis day in and day out can be quite monotonous and sometimes unproductive as I know I can leave unfinished tasks till the following day.  Hopefully throwing more activities into my week will make me far more productive.

After dinner I snacked on some homemade popcorn with maple syrup and Laura’s suggestion of peanut flour.

It tasted a-maz-ing and I think it’s safe to say that I’m now definitely addicted to the peanut flour and maple syrup combo…yum!  And few apples may have been consumed along the way too.

Well I better get going and bet the traffic on my way to work.  Happy WIAW!!

Have you ever struggled with guilt when you don’t make it to the gym?

Do you like the salty and sweet combo? Lindt dark chocolate with sea salt is my favourite. 🙂

What is the best thing that you have eaten today?

  5. Glad you’re feeling better! Those 24 hour bugs suck. I agree with you that I’m more productive when other stuff is going on, as I know I’ve only got X hours to get stuff done, not days, so it kicks me in to gear a bit. Hope it works for you 🙂

I absolutely love pretzels with vegan Nutella spread – a childhood favorite. And on the special occasions, when our parents took us to McD’s, me and my sis would eat french fries with our vanilla soft serve 😉 pretty good!

    Have a lovely one
    xoxo Mel

That fig salad looks amazing- I have to get my hands on some figs before they’re out of season again!

I alwaysssss struggle with guilt when skipping my work-outs, regardless of the reason. It’s something that I have just learnt to deal with though… tomorrow is another day 🙂

  12. Glad you enjoyed the salad and the popcorn! As you know I love sweet and salty and right now it has to be extra salty home made nut butters with honey, so good!

  13. Figs make anything better! This all looks really tasty! Now I’m hungry!

  14. yeah i haven’t been working out lately at ALL since feeling sick so i understand the guilt! 🙂 I just tell myself to get over it!

  15. So glad you’re feeling better!
I love that Lindt chocolate (and also pineapple on pizza – that’s kind of sweet and salty?) but i cannot stand sweet and salty popcorn mixed together – yuck!!

  16. I am the WORST with gym guilt – more so than if I over indulge on the sweets. Which is weird, because in truth that would probably have more effect on weight that missing one workout. But aside from guilt, I get really anxious in general, and especially in times when i’m stressed, I just need to let my excess energy out. Otherwise I can’t focus on anything and can’t sit still at all.
As for sweet and salty – that is a dangeroulsy addicting combination! Especially anything salted caramel & chocolate.

  17. I like to plan out my workouts in advance, so when I don’t do one of them I do sometimes feel guilty. I have got more relaxed lately though and realise that missing one or two sessions isn’t going to make a difference. You work out a lot, so the odd extra rest day will probably do you good 🙂
I tried some chocolate covered salted peanuts the other day and the combination was heavenly!

  18. The best thing I’ve eaten today was my apple and pb snack. It’s always a winner! I guess that’s also a good sweet/salty combo. The pb is sorta’ salty and the apple’s fairly sweet. Delish!

  19. I have a real guilt problem if I don’t work out, I try to give my self a full day off a week but a lot of the time I do 2 workouts gym in the morning, Bikram in the evening! I’ll be the first to admit I have an addiction to exercise but it makes me feel so good I don’t think I’ll ever stop! : )

  20. Ohh man I love salty and sweet! I think my favorite combo is an apple + peanut butter!

  21. Ooooh that curry sounds YUM! I had curry too hehe 🙂 Glad you’re feeling better too sweetie..there’s nothing worse than feeling under the weather. I still have a cold GRR!
Gym guilt is something that I’m still dealing with massively but like you, I logically know that one day off is not the end of the world. We eat healthy and exercise regularly and it’s not like anything bad is going to happen from one day off. We don’t exactly eat large quantities of unhealthy foods with no exercise as a lifestyle which is when it becomes a problem to your health. Plus I think it’s good not only for our bodies but also for our minds to have a day off and just relax completely so that you feel refreshed because tomorrow is a fresh start 🙂

  22. That salad looks amazing. I’ve only had the dark chocolate with sea salt once but it was sooooo good. I try not to let it bother me if I miss a workout but I do get annoyed when I miss more than one in a row…since I started work the time is just flying by and it can be hard to fit everything in but all you can do is try your best to balance everything. x

  23. LOVE your eats! sweet and salty is the best combo!

  24. You know I love sweet and salty, I just wrote about it on my blog today 🙂
And I have serious guilt when it comes to exercise.. I am so working on this and finding peace with myself

  25. I don’t tend to feel too guilty about missing a workout, but I hate getting behind on my mileage.

  26. Oh figs beautiful figs. I love them so much. Your breakfast also looked delicious!

  27. survivingcandyland
