WIAW: Battling the Bloat

Hey guys and girlies!  It was such a struggle to get back into working mode yesterday, but I think I managed it quite well.  I’m so happy that it’s the middle of the week already though as it means that the weekend is that little bit closer.

The fact that it’s the middle of the week also means that it’s time for WIAW!!!  Thanks to the lovely Jenn as always for hosting such an amazing event in blog land. If you are stuck for inspiration for meals this week then WIAW is a great way to find some inspiration.

For the whole of January I’ve decided to embark on a much more cleaner and healthier way of eating after the Christmas period of heavy foods and a bloated, sugared out and sickly stomach.  I hate feeling this way and eating an almost plant based diet works wonders for me and I always feel better for it.  I know this kind of diet isn’t for everyone, but we are all different and I know what works for my body and what I love.

Over the Christmas period I may have put on a few pounds or I may not have.  I don’t really know as I never weigh myself these days and my clothes still fit just fine, but that’s not my point.  It’s all about the way I feel within myself and feeling heavy, bloated and lethargic because of what I eat doesn’t really appeal to me.  My cleaner eating will be derived from lots of dark leafy greens, raw foods, beans and lots of whole grains to help prevent any energy slumps which I’m prone to due to my wavering sugar levels.  I know most clean eating diets are ridiculed for small portions and making people feel ill, but this isn’t about being restrictive at all.  If I feel hungry between meals then I will eat-it’s as simple as that!

So as of yesterday my cleaner eating began starting with a workout at the gym, which included a 30 minute interval run on the treadmill followed by strength workout 1 and a 5 minute cool down on the bike.

For my post workout breakfast I made an awesome avocado green smoothie made using half an avocado, a banana, spinach, almond butter, water and some Midori greens.  The avocado made this so creamy and smooth.  I’ve been enjoying my smoothies without xanthan gum and guar gums the past few weeks to have a break from them for a while.  Most of the time without the gums the smoothies have been coming out more like juices, but using ice, frozen bananas or avocados is a great way to still have a creamy green smoothie.  I also snacked on a large persimmon mid-morning too.

Lunches the past few days has been a simple vegetable broth that I cooked up at the weekend.  It’s really quite soothing and comforting and is basically made from a mix of chopped vegetables, fresh tomatoes, spices and vegetable stock…yum!  I also snacked on two pink lady apples.

For some afternoon fuel out came the hummus with dates and raw carrots for dipping.  Hummus with veggies just makes the perfect snack for afternoon munchies. 😀

Later for dinner I raided the freezer for leftover Christmas vegetables, the last slice of my Festive Veggie Loaf and some swede chips with some ketchup. I love this veggie loaf and will definitely have to experiment with some different flavours and ingredients next time round.

In the evening I really wasn’t that hungry but wanted to snack on something so I had a few teaspoons of peanut butter, which really hit the spot.  Since I’ve been battling a sniffly nose and sore throat since Friday I’ve been drinking lots of hot water or green tea with lemon and honey.  I made a huge match yesterday evening in my new tea pot and it seems to be working wonders.

Day one of my clean eating didn’t go badly at all.  These eats are much cleaner than my festive eats and not restrictive.  I made sure that I was full without over eating and the lower sugar intake didn’t seem to affect my blood sugar too.

How did you find your first day back at work/college?

What was the best thing that you have eaten for this weeks WIAW?

  1. Hope you feel better! 🙂

The green smoothie looks awesome! I have some Midori Greens powder too but am not sure what to use it for right now.. I’ll try it in a smoothie sometime! 🙂

I’ve been eating lots of smoothies and oatmeal this week which Im loving. 🙂

  2. I think these few weeks after the holidays are always hard to get back into the groove again! Way to go with your clean eating plan- loving those smoothie ingredients! Have a good one!

  3. I hope you’ll feel better soon!
I’ll have to go back to school tomorrow and I am not so happy about it – especially since there will be a math exam waiting for me… Noooo! 😦

  4. I’m so jelous that you’re still munching xmas day veggies….they really are the best aren’t they? And your veggie loaf looks lush too, i might have to have a go at making it for Sunday dinner 🙂

Glad you’re feeling less bloated and more like your usual self.

  5. Your tea pot looks so pretty! I’m feeling miles better too, looks like we will be eating similar plans for January too, got to love those veggies! 🙂

  6. I love all your eats!

The soup and smoothie look terrific! So glad you are back and happy with clean eating again! It definitely makes me feel better inside too 🙂

  7. Good job with clean eating, Jemma! The smoothie looks yummy!

  8. I really needed to read this after hearing so many people talk about their post-holiday diets! Cleaner eating is the way to go, not restricting!

Your meals look fantastic as ever, and I’m sure you’ll be feeling your energetic old self in no time at all 🙂

  9. The first day back was bleak! My inbox was out of control and (naturally) it was the coldest day of the winter, complete with snow. Ah well, time to get back to reality!

  10. Errign

I had homemade risotto & focaccia at a friends house the other night and then last night at the same friends house, I had cheese & chocolate fondue – yum!

  11. LOVE your teapot! But then I do love all teapots 🙂
I think a back to basics at this time of year is always good- I am trying to get as many vitamins in as possible so lots of fruits and veggies right now.

  12. What a great resolution for January. 😀 The vegetable broths sound delicious. And ugh I dreaded returning school so much but now that I’m actually back, it’s not as horrible as I expected.

  13. Yum, I love your dinner 🙂

I really need to get into eating less sweet things – I am on an enforced caffeine ‘detox’ (aside from a bit of cocoa powder) because of my insomnia, plus my caffeine addiction had become so bad that it was giving me tics (although those could be stress related, but they seem to be calming down a bit). I still keep on eating sweet things at every opportunity though, and it messes with my blood sugar badly.

I wish I had the right mindset to actually eat cleanly for a change.

  14. I’m sooo bloated at the mo too. It’s all about clean, plant-based eats 🙂 hope you feel better soon xxx

  15. Over Christmas I was going to bed with a really gurgly stomach every night. It was so good to go to bed with a happy tummy last night.
That smoothie looks lovely. I need to eat more avocado and that sounds like a great way to eat them 🙂

  16. I bet the avocado was amazing in the smoothie, I’ve got to try that! I love veggie loaf too, and roasted veg with ketchup, perfect healthy comfort food.
I hope you feel better soon 🙂

  17. Good job with the cleaner eating, you really did well with it!

  18. I love the clean eats! I think I did pretty well staying clean over the holidays, but I still have chocolate stashed up, and it’s incredibly hard to resist. That’s my biggest weakness, always.

  19. i agree that eating a mostly plant based and clean diet just makes ya feel good! weight and all else besides – it is the way i feel that motivates me to eat clean (or at least for the most part).

So refreshing to see another women who doesn’t weigh herself. As a personal trainer, I try so hard to emphasize to my clients that it’s all about “how you feel and how your clothes fit”. I don’t weigh myself either. 🙂 Best thing I’ve eaten this week, my dinner tonight, which was a shrimp quesadilla with spinach, squash, onion, corn, salsa, and hot sauce.

  21. My holiday break has me feeling rather bloated and lethargic as well. I came back to my home away from home to prepare myself for the upcoming week. I start back school on Monday and I am not looking forward to it! I, too, have a cold and only hope to heal soon. 4 days with this mess is no fun!

I actually have a half of an avocado leftover from my dinner tonight, so I will try incorporating it into a smoothie in the morning. Such a genius idea!

    Happy WIAW!

  22. I had a container of xantham gum for a while and it made really good, thick smoothies, but I haven’t bought any since I ran out. I agree that bananas are essential for creamy smoothies if you don’t use xantham gum!

  23. What a fantastic idea for a healthy and creamy smoothy. I am happy new follower and if you get a chance stop by my cooking website if you get a minute. Looking forward to staying in touch in 2012. http://bamskitchen.com/
    Take care, BAM

  24. I bet that avocado green smoothie was SO Creamy!!!! It sounds so good!

  25. The veggie loaf looks awesome! Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  26. Looks like a great day of healthy, clean eats!

I go back to school in a few days; it’s going to be bittersweet! I miss the routine, but I’m also loving the relaxation of home.
