Friday Feature: Goal Setting!

Hello lovely readers!  Hasn’t June been such a fab month?!?!  I think I’ve loved every single bit of it and you can read why in this post.  I’m also super excited as Munchy Seeds and Lusciously Raw are my new blog sponsors for July.  Pulsin’ continuously sponsoring the blog so make use of that 10% discount!

Since it’s the 1st of July I thought it would be great to make this Friday Feature post all about setting goals and how important this is to me for my own well being.

For me personally setting goals is important to give me something to aim towards each month.  Obviously, like everyone else I have an overall agenda, that is, main life goals that I want to achieve.  But, tight now they are far in the distance and will only be achieved if I thrive in the present.  By making small and attainable goals each month just makes my overall goals seem more achievable and not so far away in the future.

Making goals gives me some kind of direction in all areas of my life, personally, in my career and spiritually.  Knowing that I have something to achieve each month gives me a reason to get up early in the morning and aim to have a productive day.  Not only do I feel a sense of achievement when I have reached my goals that I have set for the month, but I also feel that they provide me with determination and motivation to succeed.

Goals are like are almost like a map through life, they help you get to your destination a lot faster rather than traveling through life aimlessly and without purpose…

…or maybe like stepping stones, baby steps heading towards your over all goal.

My goals for June:

  • Maintain a running pace of around 9.5 minutes/miles

  • increase my long running mileage to 10 miles

  • try and run 10k in 60 minutes (this one may be a challenge)

  • prepare my poster presentation for the IBRO conference in Florence

  • write one chapter of my thesis

  • continue with my work out plan including my new Spin Core and Body Pump classes

I achieved all of my goals except trying to run 10K in 60 minute, although I have shaved almost 2 minutes off my original 10K time.  I’ve written one chapter of my thesis. OK, it may be only the materials and methods section (the easiest part), but it’s a start! Ha!  My poster for the conference is all done too, except for some minor tweaking.  🙂

My new goals for July:

  • Continue to eat a more plant based diet.  I’m feeling great at the moment and I know diet is down to that.  Last month I really paid attention to the kind of produce that I was eating and kept it varied by doing small shops each week making sure to pick up different veg and fruit each time.  Last nights veggie stir fry and this morning green smoothie definitely helped me make head way this this goal.

  • review my workout schedule so that it is less demanding an incorporates my running, cardio, and classes, but I also want to work on my resistance work too- more on that next week!
  • Be positive and see the good in every day- I hate being surrounded by negativity and one way to stop that from happening is to see the positive in every negative, no matter how bad the situation may be.
  • start drawing the figures for the results section of my thesis
  • network like mad at the IBRO conference- potential future employers could be in attendance…eek!
  • eat less dairy- I’ve found that my dairy intake goes in peaks and troughs.  For me eating dairy upsets my hayfever as it helps the formation of mucous (sorry to  be so gross!)   I’m not cutting it out completely, but just want to see how my body reacts with a reduced intake.  I’ve already started experimenting with vegetarian mozzarella, protein ice-cream and soya yoghurt really enjoyed both.

  • de-clutter- unloading all of the junk that I’ve been hoarding always does me the world of good. I’ve already made a great start on this goal and put a few things on eBay.
  • Run 11 miles…fingers crossed!

Do you find it helpful to set goals?

What are you looking forward to in July?  I’m buzzing that July is here, there’s so much to look forward to. I’m off to Florence in a few weeks for a conference, I have my first ever 10K race, another wedding to attend and Alfie’s graduation ceremony…wohooo!

What are you doing this weekend?  Other than working I have my usual long run planned and I’m going to the local Godiva Festival.  It’s a free festival with lots of live music, great food, arts and crafts and a fair ground too. I hope the weather stays nice for it! 🙂

Have a great weekend everyone!
